👤 About Joe
_
👨‍💻

Hi, I'm Joe. I run a no-nonsense WordPress hosting service from London. No corporate nonsense, no call centres, no ticket queues. You get hosted by me, managed by me, backed up by me.

Most of my clients are people I know personally, friends, local businesses, word of mouth. But if you've stumbled across this page, you're welcome to enquire. It stays personal by design.

All plans are yearly, keeping costs predictable for both of us. And one thing I feel strongly about: your domain is always yours. I'll have admin access to do the technical bits, but it's registered in your name, stays in your name, full stop. I recommend Cloudflare for domains. They charge at near-wholesale, so there's no funny markup.

90s Style Websites

Sites like this one, built for fun when time permits. No SLA. Just pixels and conviction.

* 90s websites made free on request, when time permits. No guarantees on timeline. It's a vibe, not an SLA.

📬 Email Setup — Options Worth Knowing About

Most hosting packages bundle email in as an afterthought. cPanel mail works, but it's not what you'd use if you cared about deliverability or privacy. Here's an honest look at the options:

Not sure which fits? Mention it in your enquiry. It depends on your volume and priorities.

🌐 Domain Management — Your Domain, Always Yours

This is worth being explicit about, because the hosting industry has a poor track record on it: your domain is registered in your name, stays in your name, and can be pointed wherever you like at any time. Admin access is held purely to handle the technical work: DNS, SSL, subdomain setup. It is not leverage. It never will be.

Why Cloudflare for domain registration? Most registrars charge a retail markup on domains, sometimes significant. Cloudflare registers at near-wholesale (ICANN cost plus a small margin, publicly stated). No upsell on privacy protection, no dark patterns at renewal, genuinely good DNS infrastructure included free. It's just the honest choice. GoDaddy, Namecheap and others are fine but Cloudflare is what Joe recommends and uses personally.

If your domain is currently registered elsewhere and you want to move it, or if you'd rather keep it where it is and just point it here, both work. Mention it when you enquire.

🎨 Custom WP Themes

Custom themes are built to fit properly rather than adapted from a generic template. If you need something bespoke and built from scratch, Joe can do that.

That said, custom theme work takes time and costs accordingly. If budget is a consideration (and it usually is) a well-chosen, customisable theme is a perfectly good option and often the smarter one. Joe is happy to help find something that fits your site, set it up and configure it so it actually looks like yours. No judgement on the route taken.

If you're already on a plan, theme work (custom or template-based) is quoted separately on request.

💭 The 90s Web Wasn't All That Bad
_

The early web was a weird and wonderful place. Pages were ugly. Fonts were wrong. Under-construction GIFs were everywhere. You needed to download a plugin to play a sound. It was, objectively, a mess.

And yet, there was something there. You knew who made the page. It usually said. There was an email address at the bottom, sometimes a phone number. The person behind the site wasn't hiding behind a brand or a 48-hour support ticket window. They were just a person, like you.

The modern web is faster, smoother, and largely run by a handful of very large companies who have a complicated relationship with the concept of "your data." We've traded character for polish, and something intangible got lost along the way. Trust, maybe. The sense that you're dealing with a human.

We don't trust institutions the way we used to. Some of that's earned, they haven't always deserved it. We're more suspicious of each other online too, and again, the internet gave us good reasons for that suspicion alongside the bad ones.

💾

JoeHosting can't fix any of that. It's a hosting service, not a philosophy department. But it is run by one person, with their name on it, who you can actually talk to. That's about as close to 1999 as you're going to get in 2025.

So: welcome. The under-construction GIF has been retired. But the spirit remains.

📊 FUN FACTS
  • In 1999 there were ~3 million websites. There are now over 1.9 billion.
  • The average webpage in 1995 was ~14KB. Today it's over 2MB.
  • 56k modems transferred data at roughly 7KB/s. This page would've taken about 4 minutes to load.
  • GeoCities, the spiritual home of the 90s web, was deleted in 2009. Archivists saved what they could.
  • The "blink" HTML tag was considered acceptable once.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
_
Do I need to know Joe to sign up?
Not necessarily. Most clients come via word of mouth, and that's still the preferred route, it means we've both got a bit of context going in. But the server has space, and if you drop a sensible enquiry, Joe will have a look. Worst case he says no. He'll be nice about it.
What exactly does "managed" mean?
It means Joe handles the bits that quietly go wrong if nobody's watching: WordPress core updates, plugin updates, security patches. On Standard and Pro plans, you also get 30-day rolling backups. If something goes sideways after an update, there's a clean copy to roll back to. You keep admin access to your own site. Joe just keeps the engine running.
What's the difference between the plans really?
Starter (£6.42/mo) is for simple, infrequently-updated sites: a brochure, a portfolio, that kind of thing. No cPanel, no backups. Joe runs the show. Standard (£11.42/mo) adds 30-day backups and your own cPanel login, and suits most real-world business sites. Pro (£42.42/mo) is for high-traffic and demanding sites where downtime genuinely costs money. It also includes around an hour of site content and updates per month on average. If you're not sure, ask. Joe will tell you honestly which one fits.
Why is the Starter plan £6.42? That's an odd number.
Honestly? It just is. Round numbers feel like they've been rounded for a reason. £6.42 feels like it was worked out properly.
What happens if something breaks at 2am?
Joe is based in London, so 2am is 2am. He'll see it in the morning. That said, the server is monitored and most common issues are handled before anyone notices. If your site needs 24/7 emergency response, there are enterprise hosts with support teams for that. JoeHosting is personal. That's a trade-off worth being clear about.
Can I move my existing WordPress site to JoeHosting?
Yes. Joe can handle the migration, moving files, database, updating DNS. It's usually straightforward for a standard WordPress site. Mention it in your enquiry and he'll let you know if there are any complications worth flagging first.
Do you do email hosting too?
cPanel plans come with email hosting included, so technically yes, you can set up mailboxes for your domain. That said, for anything business-critical, Joe would steer you towards Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. They're better at email than any hosting company, and your inbox is too important to trust to a side feature.
Can you build me a WordPress site from scratch?
Custom WordPress theme development is available. Ask in your enquiry with a brief on what you're after. The 90s-style website thing is also real, but comes with the caveat that it's done when time permits and the mood strikes. There's no SLA on vibes.
Why does every price end in .42?
42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. It seemed like the right number to build the pricing around.
